The French runner completed the illustrious race in 20h 44’ 16” wearing a CamelBak UltraTM Pro Vest. In the CCC 2018, CamelBak sponsored athlete Pau Capell gets a great third place extending his leadership in the World Tour ranking.
CHAMONIX (France), September 1st, 2018 – CamelBak® the official hydration and packs sponsor of the UTMB 2018, is excited to announce that CamelBak sponsored athlete Xavier Thévenard (Team Fuji Spirit), has won the most reputed and difficult Ultra Trail race in the world. Thévenard won the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc wearing the CamelBak UltraTM Pro Vest as his preferred system for carrying gear and hydration.
Xavier completed the 170 km course with a time of 20 hours and 44 minutes, 47 minutes ahead of Romanian runner Robert Hajnal that placed 2nd while Spanish runner Jordi Gamito got the third place arriving in Chamonix 1 hour and 12 minutes after Thévenard.
"The competition started at a very high speed, from the very beginning,” said Thévenard, after the race. “I wanted to do a different race in comparison to last year, so I did not try to go too fast and focused on my own pace and on my own tempo (..). Three wins at the UTMB it's pretty cool," he added.
Xavier’s tactic proved to be a winning one. Slightly behind at the start of the race, Thévenard overtook leading US runner Zach Miller shortly after the halfway point. The American and the French runners held the lead at a very short distance from one another. In Champex, 40 km from the finish line Thévenard accelerated while Miller fell back.
The CamelBak UltraTM Pro Vest assisted Thévenard during the whole race. This vest, which is the choice of many top trail runners in the world, is the perfect solution in such hard races. Very light to wear, it comes with 2x Quick Stow flasks (0,5 L each). The vest is made with 3D vent mesh—an ultralight material that guarantees maximum airflow. It also offers plenty of front storage pockets for easy access to fuel, water or salt tabs, along with a secure zippered pocket. The back features several stretch pockets that can store extra layers as was the case in this very cold edition of the UTMB where the athletes ran under an almost constant rain. The back pocket can also accommodate an additional reservoir for self-supported runs.
This marks the third UTMB race victory for Thévenard (2013 – 2015 – 2018), who already completed a record-setting series of wins (UTMB/CCC/TDS/OCC) at the top UTMB series races.
"We are proud to sponsor Xavier and watch his incredible success,” said Sebastian Ohrmann, CamelBak European Marketing Manager. “We also congratulate Pau Capell who placed third in the CCC, extending his leadership in the World Tour ranking and all of our athletes competing in the UTMB races 2018”.
CamelBak has been encouraging people to rethink the way they hydrate since 1989. Started on the back of cyclists, CamelBak extended the line to meet more explorers where they are roaming whether it be on a trail or in their backyard. They have been striving to challenge the way people use their drinking vessels by not only using them more often but encouraging them to ditch disposable single use plastic bottles for a more durable, rugged, and safe product that will outlast even the biggest adventure.
